Our primary focus is to provide communities with a means of developing sustainable economic independence. Our work has provided us with the opportunity to collaborate with a number of rural and regional communities, and through that experience we are convinced that proactive, well informed, development oriented communities can make a significant difference to their own economic viability. Communities sometimes need support to enable them to maximise their opportunities, but they are likely to be most successful in attracting government and private investment if they have a strong and well development sense of their own capacities, resources and desired direction. This section includes papers and articles in which we develop these themes and argue the point that regional communities benefit most from a "hand up" rather than a "hand out" approach.
