Planning for Social Enterprise

Lifeline Australia

Lifeline Australia commissioned SES to look at the national structure and costings of some of Lifeline Australia's core activities such as telephone counseling. This project extends from work on activity based costing that SES completed for Lifeline Australia in 2005. This project was completed in early 2007.

Crockwell Medical Centre Feasibility Study and Business Plan

Crookwell recently opened a health centre to replace a frail-aged facility which has since closed.

In 2007, SES did a feasibility study and business plan to provide an independent evaluation of the viability of the centre, including a risk assessment, and prepared a business plan to take the project from concept, through implementation to operation.

 

ACT Companion Card

SES was selected by the ACT Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services to undertake a feasibility study into establishing a Companion Card in the ACT. The Card would be held by people with disabilities who need help getting out and about, and would enable the person accompanying them to enter a range of venues free of charge. Completed 2005.

Lifeline Australia

In 2005 SES worked with Lifeline Australia on a diagnostic assessment of some of the core activities of Lifeline Centres. The assessment combined rigorous costing of specified activities with recognition of the unique environment of each of the Centres and the central role that volunteers and goodwill play in the organisation. The assessment sought to balance the quantitative and human dimensions of Lifeline Centre activities. Completed 2005.

National Wool Museum Benchmarking

In 2004 the National Wool Museum (NWM) engaged SES to review its activities, positioning and operations and set directions for the future. The review included benchmarking of the NWM shop to identify achievable strategies to improve operations and profitability. The consultancy had two stages, commencing with one-to-one interviews and a ‘desk top’ review of the activities and operations of four similar regional museums in Australia. We used the interviews to enable general comparison and more formal benchmarking of the Museum against its peers.

The second stage involved a closer look at the operations and directions for the Museum shop. This stage focused on benchmarking key performance indicators for the shop with other similar enterprises using commercial benchmarks for similar specialty retail stores.

Creative Arts Incubator Tasmania

In 2005, the Salamanca Arts Centre and Designed Objects Tasmania commissioned CREEDA projects to undertake a feasibility study and business plan for a multi-site, multi-arts small business incubator for Tasmania.

CREEDA Projects commissioned SES to help with the study. SES was particularly involved in: the market assessment; establishing the level of support for the incubator from the Arts community; looking at the possible service mix that the incubator may provide. SES worked closely with CREEDA on the final report and business plan.

The market analysis involved desk top analysis, extensive consultation using interviews and a survey with artists in Tasmania (assessing their capabilities, potential interest in the incubator and business growth potential) and with organisations representing artists.

The study verified that:
­ there is an identified market
­ the proposed services have industry support
­ the services complement and build on related arts activities
­ there are experienced and committed champions
­ there are suitable governance mechanisms

The feasibility study showed that a dedicated entrepreneurial arts business incubation service in Tasmania, focusing on business growth, was feasible given adequate resources are secured for its establishment.

The study also showed that the Tasmanian arts and cultural industry has achieved a position and maturity whereby such a service is now required to advance economic outcomes for artists, arts businesses and the state. The project was completed in early 2006.

Spatial Sciences Organisations Merger

In 2002 the Spatial Sciences Coalition engaged SES to advise its Interim Board on key amalgamation issues and to assist with the development of documentation to complete the amalgamation process. The major outcome of the consultancy was a Prospectus that was voted on by the memberships of all five member Associations in forming a new body – the Spatial Sciences Institute.

Involvement by SES focused on providing advice to the Coalition’s working groups on the preparation of their reports to ensure that they were all working from the same assumptions and to the same administrative model. We had an important role in overseeing the amalgamation process to identify gaps across outputs of the working groups and preparing the Prospectus to go to members for consideration and vote.

Goulburn Equine Industry Development Association

The Goulburn Equine Industry Development Association selected SES to conduct a low-cost mid-term evaluation of its industry development activities. SES worked with the Association to develop a suitable evaluation methodology, focusing on interviews with a pool of selected stakeholders. Completed in 2001.

Contemporary Glass Centre

The ACT Government has been looking for several years at the possibility of establishing a Contemporary Glass Industry Development Centre in the ACT. While previous work covered several different aspects of the proposed Centre, none had been able to establish the extent of market need for a Centre and its products. The Capital Region Enterprise and Employment Development Association (CREEDA) was asked to develop a fully-fledged business plan, and asked SES to undertake a comprehensive market assessment.

The market analysis involved extensive consultation with glass artists in the region (assessing their capabilities) and with gallery owners and other retailers of studio glass (assessing market size and trends) in Queensland and NSW. The analysis identified a market niche that a suitable facility could expect to enter competitively. SES worked closely with CREEDA to prepare a detailed business plan for a suitable facility, and the whole study was well-received by its sponsor, the ACT Government. The project was completed in 2000.

Financial institutions merger

Several locally-based financial institutions in the Southeast NSW Region selected SES to prepare a business plan for a merger.

SES reviewed mergers in other areas and overseas and assessed the issues facing the potential merging parties, outlining the strengths and weaknesses of merging, and summarising the costs and benefits.

SES continued working on merger implementation issues, teaming up with Process Design Australia in implementing the merging of the institutions’ IT systems. The project was completed in 2000.
