Youth at the Centre

This is a national initiative focusing on retention of young people in rural Australia, and their active involvement in its economic and social future. While the project focuses upon school experiences which enable students to begin to audit and respond to local community needs and opportunities, it also provides tools and programs to support young men and women who have left school to enhance their participation in and contribution to the life of their local community.

Rural Entrepreneurs of the Future Workshops

This initiative is being co-ordinated by the Youth at the Centre Program. Workshops are held in each state and present an opportunity for 15 to 30 year olds to spend an intensive three days residential workshop exploring the option of self employment. The opportunity enables them to develop a full business plan. They receive coaching from a group of existing rural entrepreneurs.

The Beacon Foundation

The Beacon Foundation is a 'not for profit' registered charitable trust and public benevolent institution which has a single issue and focus on job creation for youth. The Beacon Foundation:

  • is wholly independant and self supporting, untied to any interest group whatsoever.
  • is structured in a manner reflective of its focus in that the Foundation seeks to generate its own funds from profitable enterprise and thereby lives within its own ethos. No Beacon Director/Board member can derive any benefit whatsoever from the Foundation's activities.
  • directs its attention to original and innovative approaches to the resolution of what is arguably Australia's current, single most important issue - youth unemployment. The Foundation does not replicate past programs due to the fact that despite the endeavours of many, many good people, the problem of youth unemployment is not reducing; perhaps the contrary is true.
  • seeks to undertake its projects in a wholly transparent manner in order to encourage others to "have a go" at the problem rather than accept it as an inevitable reality.
  • is a "Demonstrator" not a "Service Provider".
  • believes that the problem can be solved but only as a result of vigorous effort in both thought and action.
